Four arrested for Imbali killings

2013-01-09 00:00

POLICE arrested four men, aged between 21 and 24 years, last week in connection with the murders last week of a motorist and a tavern keeper in Imbali.

The motorist, Sthembiso Duma (43), was shot dead in Imbali on January 3 after the suspects had stopped his white Volkswagen Golf and robbed him.

Police spokesperson Joey Jeevan said they arrested two men in Imbali on Friday, one in Unit J and the other in Unit 2, in connection with the murder and robbery.

On Saturday, police arrested two other male suspects in Mpumalanga township and Mkhambathini outside Durban.

One of the suspects was found in possession of an unlicensed 9 mm Norinco pistol with two live rounds, Jeevan said.

“All four suspects have been linked to another murder that occurred prior to the murder and hijacking of Duma.”

Jeevan said the men were alleged to have shot Ntobeko Zungu (28), the owner of a tavern in Imbali, on January 2.

She said they posed as customers wanting to buy bubble-gum.

Zungu (28) told them he did not sell bubblegum. One of the men took out a gun and shot Zungu in the stomach, killing him.

The men fled.

Jeevan said police believe the same suspects then went to Imbali Unit 2, where they allegedly hijacked and killed Duma (30) and took his vehicle.

The arrested suspects would appear in court soon, said Jeevan. — Witness Reporter.
