Four days of great cricket at Michaelmas

2013-10-01 00:00

THE 54th Michaelmas Cricket Week has come and gone and while the hosts Maritzburg College may not have been pleased with some of their performances in their 150th anniversary year, it was a very successful four days, both from the overall standard of the cricket and the weather.

Three teams won all four matches: Michaelhouse, the only KZN side to do so, together with Affies and KES from outside the province. At the other end of the scale it was just St Charles that lost all four matches, but they were never overwhelmed and lost two narrowly.

Batsmen generally did better than the bowlers as the weather and pitches were good on three of the four days. There were three centuries scored with another 50 half centuries. In the bowling department, two bowlers captured six and another two took five wickets, with four wickets taken by another 10 bowlers.

On 20 occasions sides scored over 200 runs, with 14 of these in the same seven matches. The highest team score was 269 for 9 by Hilton in the game against Hudson Park, which they won by 185 runs on the first day.

The highest score on a ground on one day was 501 runs between College and Pretoria BHS, which was won by three wickets by College chasing a target of 250.
