Four exciting school games to start the weekend

2012-01-28 00:00

THERE are four important school clashes today, two in the capital and two in Durban. Tomorrow there will be two T20 semi-finals in Maritzburg making it a good weekend for cricket-lovers.

Arguably the top game is on the Hart-Davis Oval at Hilton where the home side play Maritzburg College. The latter have played two games this week in the Sunfoil Schools’ Night league where they won both. Hilton have played one, winning with a big margin against the President’s XI. Most significantly College showed a return to batting form against Michaelhouse on Thursday and this should increase their confidences after the loss last week against Glenwood.  College’s major strength at this early stage has been their bowling.

Hilton have played five matches without suffering a loss and they will be confident on their home ground. They have some talented players and will pin their hopes on at least one batsman in the top order doing well.

St Charles will host Kearsney today. Both teams have lost two matches, Kearsney against St Johns from Harari and Bishops.

St Charles have lost against St Stithians and Maritzburg College, the latter at the beginning of the week in a low-scoring match.

On paper Kearsney have the more settled side, which will make it a good game for the Maritzburg lads to win.

Michaelhouse travel to Durban to play Glenwood.

The home side will be very confident after bowling College out last week to win the game, after only scoring 150 runs.

Michaelhouse lost by 11 runs against College on Thursday which will make Glenwood favourites. Michaelhouse have an advantage in having played seven matches compared to just one game played by Glenwood.

DHS got their local season off to a good start with a good performance against Northwood last Saturday.

Although it was a draw, Northwood were facing defeat, still requiring 102 runs with just two wickets in hand. Westville have lost one game, but they are expected to be one of the top teams in the province this year, particularly as they have nine players back from last year. This should also be a keenly contested game.

On Sunday morning the semi-finals of the KZN Inland zone of the CSA Schools National T20 competition take place.

College play Hilton on Goldstones and St Charles will host Michaelhouse. The winners will then contest the Inland final to see who will play against Westville.

The latter won the Coastals final against Northwood.

Selected fixtures (home side first): Hilton vs Maritzburg College; St Charles vs Kearsney; Glenwood vs Michaelhouse; DHS vs Westville; George Campbell vs Northwood; St Henrys vs Clifton; Pinetown vs Hillcrest; Treverton vs Howick; Kloof vs Thomas More; Carter vs Voortrekker; Greytown vs Wartburg; Alexandra vs Linpark; Weston vs M College III.
