Four held for Westville housebreaking

2013-12-21 00:00

WESTVILLE police and the Durban K9 Unit arrested four men suspected of housebreaking and attempted murder on Thursday night, after being alerted about the crime in progress.

At about 9.30 pm, the members were performing duties as part of the festive season operational plan, when they heard about a housebreaking at Methven Road, Westville.

On arrival, they spotted the suspects — aged between 27 and 31 — fleeing in their getaway vehicle. “The police officers followed the suspects into Birdhurst Road, where the men abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot whilst shooting at police officers,” spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Police returned fire, wounding one suspect in his leg. The three other men sustained dog bite wounds when they were arrested by members of the K9 Unit. All four were taken to a local hospital for medical attention and are under police guard.

The owner of the house was away on holiday.

Police also recovered a pistol from the suspects, as well as a black VW Polo that was stolen in Berea on November 29. The suspects will appear at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of housebreaking and attempted murder.
