THE speedy response of members of the Umhlali K9 unit to a report of an attack on a couple near the N2 on Saturday resulted in the arrest of four suspects for robbery and rape.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said a 25-year-old woman and her boyfriend were accosted by four men at about 6.30 pm.

The couple were threatened with knives and robbed of their belongings.

The boyfriend managed to flee to a nearby garage, from where he contacted the police.

However, the robbers dragged the woman into the bushes and raped her.

She was taken to hospital.

Members of the Umhlali K9 unit found one man near the scene and searched him. He was found in possession of a cellphone, which belonged to the couple, and was immediately arrested.

Police then went to Shakas-head, where they arrested a further three suspects.

Naicker said all four men were detained on charges of rape and robbery, and were expected to appear in court soon. They are aged between 22 and 28 years.
