FOUR people were killed and five others were seriously injured yesterday morning when two cars collided on the R617 Underberg-Bulwer road.

One of the injured suffered critical head injuries.

According to reports, a VW Citi Golf and a Toyota Corolla collided head-on on the R617 near Centacow.

It is believed that the Toyota Corolla was headed towards Bulwer and the VW Golf was bound for Underberg. Both vehicles negotiated a sharp bend and slammed into one another when one crossed into oncoming traffic.

On colliding, the VW Golf spun out of control and came to rest in the field at the roadside. The second vehicle lay in the roadway.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 said three occupants of the VW Golf were killed and the driver and front seat passenger were trapped in the twisted metal of the car. One person from the Toyota was killed in the collision.

The injured were treated and stabilised at the scene by Netcare911 paramedics before they were taken to the Centacow Provincial Hospital for further emergency medical care.

Inspector Bonginkosi Mbajwa of the collision unit said they suspect that the driver of the Toyota Corolla was speeding

He said the cars hit each other on the right side, killing the drivers instantly.
