Fourteen-year-old makes history in cycling race

2010-10-16 00:00

LAST Sunday’s Time Freight Midmar Notts Cycle Race was intensely contested over the 80 km course as the elites, juniors and veteran 30-39 age-group set a cracking pace.

A small break-away group formed before halfway and maintained their gap through to the finish with cross and tail winds making for a fast return journey.

AC Swanepoel clocked the fastest time of the day, breaking the tape in one hour, 57 minutes, seven seconds. Christopher Jennings snatched second in the sprint for the line (1:57:08) with veteran champ Michael Adey claiming a remarkable third (1:57:30).

Isabel Moolman has stamped her name into the Midmar Notts record books, having won the February edition and several others in previous years. Her winning time of 2:11:36 placed her nearly three minutes clear of Charmaine McCallum in second and Claire Matthews in third (both 2:14:23).

Honours in the tandem race went to Stuart Roos and Bryan Cusack (2:02:21).

Gena Lofstrand made history by being the first women (at the age of 14) to take the overall honours in the 40 km race (1:26:50). She was followed home by veteran Bridgette Trollip (1:26:51).

The event was marred by the tragic death of participant Olive Knight who was knocked down by an unlicensed motorist just moments before entering Midmar Dam resort to finish the race.
