France Eskom protest

2010-11-18 00:00

RESIDENTS in the France township have chased off Eskom employees — who started disconnecting pre-paid meters that had been tampered with — a day after the community marched to deliver a memorandum of grievances detailing their hardships to Premier’s office.

On Tuesday the community intimidated the workers until they left the area. In turn, Eskom employees threatened to switch the power off for the whole area, a situation which France’s councillor, Skhumbuzo Radebe, managed to avert.

Community leader Mduduzi Hlongwane said there would be violence if the disconnections continue.

He believed France is being victimised “because they were not the only ones stealing electricity.”
