Fraud: Four found guilty

2010-11-02 00:00

FOUR people were found guilty in the Hibberdene court last Tuesday after facing charges of fraud.

Bongani Reginald Vezi, Jabulile Shibase, Mandakhe Nqumako and Anna Bongiwe Dlamini were arrested by Detective Warrant Officer Sifiso Ngubane from the Hibberdene police department last week for fraud after they were found to be in possession of fraudulent applications for disability grants.

Vezi allegedly issued these forms using a stamp from a clinic to certify that the applicants were disabled.

Vezi pleaded guilty and paid an admission of guilt fine of R500.

The other three each received a suspended fine of R1 200 or three months imprisonment; all suspended for five years.

Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid, Communications officer for the South African Police Force (SAPF) in Port Shepstone, said that the issue of people using fraudulent applications for disability grants is something that happens quite regularly on the south coast.

Wiid added that it is something that is taken very seriously by the SAPF.

“This and also the issue of fraudulent applications for social grants is something that happens all over the place,” she said.

“It is difficult to catch people who do it, but we react whenever we are given information.”

Wiid stressed that members of the community can play a role in stopping the problem.

“If anybody knows of instances where individuals are applying for grants illegally they should contact their local police station so that we can put a stop to this.”
