Fraud: Perumal trial postponed

2011-12-15 00:00

SENIOR Msunduzi manager Kevin Perumal’s fraud trial has been postponed until May in the regional court.

Perumal faces fraud charges involving R30 069 arising from alleged abuses of the municipality’s subsistence and travel allowance scheme.

At the time of the alleged offences Perumal was the strategic executive manager, sound governance and human resources.

The charge sheet alleges that between October 2003 and July 2006 he submitted fraudulent claims to Msunduzi Municipality for his subsistence and travel allowance in that he had claimed double for some trips, inflated distances travelled and the amount to be reimbursed, claimed travel expenses for trips not undertaken and for trips conducted in his private capacity.

Perumal has denied the allegations.

It was suggested in cross-examination by his advocate, Christo van Schalkwyk SC earlier this week that there were “hidden agendas” behind the charges.

The case will resume on May 21 next year.
