Fraudster escape

2012-01-30 00:00

CONVICTED fraudster Dennis Soobramoney’s run for freedom this weekend was shortlived.

Police arrested him at the Mooi River toll plaza on Saturday, a day after he escaped from Durban’s King Edward VIII Hospital.

Soobramoney, who was serving a 20-year sentence for fraud, feigned illness as part of his elaborate escape bid, KwaZulu-Natal’s correctional services department spokesperson Nokuthula Zikhali confirmed yesterday. He had been in Westville Prison’s medium B complex.

Zikhali also confirmed that a prison warder who had been put in charge of Soobramoney while he was “recuperating” in King Edward VIII hospital, has been charged with aiding and abetting the prisoner’s escape on Friday. She told The Witness an internal investigation into the role played by the warder and the exact circumstances surrounding Soobramoney’s escape from hospital would be conducted once the police investigation has been completed. “At this stage we don’t have access to the warder or to the prisoner concerned, as they are under police arrest, and we can only conduct our inquiries once the court proceedings have been finalised,” she said.

Zikhali added that a full report was still in the process of being compiled in connection with the escape as well as Soobramoney’s arrest.

National Correctional Services commissioner, Tom Moyane, was not aware of the incident as he was out of the country on Friday, he said.

He referred The Witness to the provincial department.

Provincial police spokesman, Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that Durban detectives arrested a convicted fraudster at the Mooi River toll plaza on Saturday.

The police, acting on information, had intercepted a vehicle transporting the escaped prisoner at the toll plaza, he said.

Both Soobramoney and the warder are expected to appear in court in Durban today
