Free State end Inland winning streak

2012-03-05 00:00

AFTER the high of back-to-back three-day and one-day victories over Easterns last weekend, KZN Inland had the same treatment meted out to them in Bloemfontein on Saturday and yesterday, as Free State followed their innings and a 34-run win in the three-day encounter by a four-wicket win, with 11 balls to spare in the 50-over match.

Yesterday, Inland opener Devon Conway made the most of Free State asking his side to bat in the 50-over match by scoring a 132 that included 15 fours and three sixes and came off 142 balls. However, apart from Glen Addicott’s 45 and the 101-run stand between the two for the fourth wicket, the nine other members of the Inland batting line-up contributed just 17 runs between them. Indeed, “extras” was the third top scorer on 21 in Inland’s 215-run total.

It was Free State’s partnerships of 64, 65 and 53 that carried them past the 216-run target, Kyle Nipper and Faheem Suleman getting three and two wickets respectively with the ball for Inland, while Tabraiz Shamsi’s nought for 31 in 10 was tidy.

The innings defeat in the three-day match could be traced to Inland’s first-inning 166 all out in just 60 overs, which gave Free State ample time to craft a formidable 406 for nine declared in 124 long overs in the field for the Pietermaritzburg-based lads.

A daunting 240 runs behind on the first innings going into their second dig, Inland were dismissed for 206 in 63 overs, the consistent Addicott getting 57 and the only batsman to spend two hours out in the middle. The Inland men batted the same number of overs in two innings as Free State did in one.

50-over: KZN Inland 215 in 46.5 overs (D Conway 132, G Addicott 45; G Vries 3-36, C Dry 3-48). Free State 219/6 in 48.1 overs (R Second 55, P Botha 40, S Khomari 37*). Free State won by 4 wickets. Points: Free State 4 KZN Inland 0.

3-day: KZN Inland 1st inn 166. Free State 1st inn 406/9 dec. Inland 2nd inn 206 (D van Wyk 42, D Conway 35, G Addicott 57; G Vries 3-46). Free State won by an innings and 34 runs.

Points: Free State 18,48 pts; KZN Inland 3,32 pts.
