Free State leads SA schools team selection with six players in starting line-up

2009-05-10 00:00

THE SA Schools team has six players from Free State, all six in the starting line-up, and five from Western Province, three of them on the bench.

The players from Free State are all Grey College boys, including the scrumhalf and captain, Pieter Rademan. Paul Roos has two players selected, as does Grey HS, one who played for Eastern Province and the other for the SA Academy side, as he was selected for Easterns’ B team and then for the SA Academy side.

KZN had just one player chosen, lock Ricky Schnetler from Glenwood. There is also one player from each of the Golden Lions, Pumas and Eastern Province Country Districts. There is not one selection that does not come from a recognised rugby-playing school.

There are always players who have played well and could have been selected, but selectors can only choose 22 places. The four KZN players who must have come into the reckoning were flyhalf Fred Zeilinga and Glenwood team-mate and prop John-Roy Jenkinson. Wing Emil Schwartz from Hilton, who was named man of the match in two games and loose forward Siseko Jafta from St Charles.

Other players who caught the eye and missed selection included two players who were selected for SA Schools in 2008, hooker Gareth Topkin (WP) and full back Garth April (Lions). Incidentally, Joel Stransky was selected for SA Schools as a 17-year -old and the following year was also not selected.

The Free State flyhalf, Johan Goosen, who is only 16, will surely be a major contender next year. Much has been said about wing Zingisa Ndiki from Western Province and he must surely also have been unlucky not to have been selected, as was lock Eben Etzebeth also from WP.

The SA Schools team will play two matches against Italy and England Under 18 sides at the beginning of August, both in Kimberley.

SA Schools 2009: 1 Stephanus Kotze (FS-Grey), 2 Bongi Mbonambi (Blue Bulls-St Albans), 3 Jozua Malherbe (WP-Paarl BHS), 4 Frederick Schnetler (KZN-Glenwood), 5 Carl Wegner (FS-Grey), 6 Lean Schwartz (Blue Bulls-Waterkloof), 7 Sean Cook (FS-Grey), 8 Siya Kolisi (EP-Grey), 9 Pieter Rademan cpt (FS-Grey), 10 William van Wyk (WP-Paarl Gym), 11 Brian Skosana (EPCD-St Andrews), 12 Andile Jho (Border-Dale), 13 Piet Lindeque (FS-Grey), 14 Sizo Maseko (Pumas-Ermelo), 15 Riaan Brits (FS-Grey), 16 Siyabonga Ntubeni (Lions-KES), 17 Zolani Faku (SA Academy-Grey HS), 18 Chris Cloete (Border-Selborne), 19 Nizaam Carr (WP-Bishops), 20 Rick Schroeder (WP-Paul Roos), 21 Tony Jantjies (Bulls-Menlopark), 22 Philippus du Plessis (WP-Paul Roos).
