Free State’s rearguard rally likely to scupper Inland win

2010-12-18 00:00

IT was the most frustrating of days for KZN Inland as Free State fought like tigers to free themselves from a perilous situation at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

The upshot was that at stumps on day two, KZN Inland trail Free State by 191 runs with nine wickets remaining in the first innings.

Free State made 263 for seven in their allotted 85 overs with Inland on 72 for one in reply.

Pinning Free State down at 111 for five, it appeared as if KZN Inland captain Kyle Nipper’s decision to put the visitors in to bat had paid off. But this second day of the Provincial Three-Day Challenge match went pear-shaped for the home side as the men from Bloemfontein mounted a fantastic rearguard action.

Captain Patrick Botha led from the front with 70 and then it was the turn of Shadley van Schalkwyk and Desmond de Koker to put on an unbroken 66 for the eighth wicket as the Free Staters posted a challenging total.

And to make matters worse, Inland opener Tim Drummond was going great guns before falling just before the close.

The first day had been totally lost due to inclement weather, which meant that the team getting first blood would have a decent chance of taking match points. As things stand, though, today’s third and final day looks set to meander to a draw.

The teams meet in the competition’s 40-over format at the same venue tomorrow.
