Freedom: DA’s Mchunu cleans up Mandela site

2011-04-28 00:00

THE Kwazulu-Natal leader of the Democratic Alliance, Sizwe Mchunu, and a few supporters celebrated yesterday’s Freedom Day by cleaning the site of the Manaye Monument in Imbali, marking the site where former President Nelson Mandela addressed his last rally before he was incarcerated for 27 years in 1961.

The monument, which stands outside Manaye Community Hall opposite the Durban University of Technology’s Ndumiso campus in Imbali, is where Mandela, then an underground operative, addressed an All-Africa Convention rally before he was arrested.

Mchunu said the decision to celebrate at Manaye was taken to highlight the meaning of the Freedom Day celebrations in South Africa, drawing on the example of “our first democratically elected president who fought for this freedom of ours.”

In the run-up to the local government elections, he said, coming to the statue will remind people of Mandela’s journey towards the achievement of freedom “as we are the only party that still upholds the vision of the rainbow nation”.

Although the DA celebration was poorly attended, Mchunu said his intention of putting across the message that everybody has a right to choose was achieved.
