‘Friend took my baby’

2009-09-24 00:00

A YOUNG mother from Mpolweni is desperate to find her three-month-old baby boy and her friend who have been missing since Saturday.

Zama Ndlovu said she had asked her friend Slindile Zondi to take her child, Sphumelele Ndlovu, to his father, Mandla Gebashe, who lives in Pietermaritzburg as she was working on that day. She said that since they left for Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, she has not heard anything from her friend and her cellphone is off.

The baby’s father said he suspected that something was wrong after he had waited for several hours in a place where they were supposed to meet.

“I do not know what might have happened as the last time I spoke to her she said that she was in a taxi to Pietermaritzburg with my baby.

“She is my childhood friend and I do not even want to suspect that she might have fled with my baby.

“If nothing happened to them, I am appealing to her to come back with my child,” she said.

Ndlovu said she went to report the matter at the Loop Street police station, but that she was told to go instead to the police in Cramond, where she originally comes from, which would cost her more money because she lives with her boyfriend in Imbali’s Unit14.

“I get paid at the end of the month and at the moment I don’t have money to go and report at the Cramond police station.”

The missing woman was wearing checked brown pants and a pink vest when she left and the baby was wrapped in a blue shawl. People with information should contact the mother at 078 257 7261 or the father at 074 367 6814.

SAPS spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said that if Ndlovu had reported that she did not have money to go to Cramond, the police would have helped her.

“In situations like this, police are able to assist. However the woman did not inform them about her problem.”
