Friendly: Kings overthrown by Griquas

2013-02-15 00:00

PORT ELIZABETH — The Kings’ Super Rugby aspirations were severely dented when they lost a pre-season game against Griquas in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday night.

“Pre-season matches are about more than the result, but every player and team wants a winning one,” coach Alan Solomons told reporters later.

“We did not get enough ball to enforce our way of play and all credit to the effort of Griquas. They dominated the lineout and denied us a platform. It is hard to play any game without ball from setpiece, and if the boys didn’t know that they certainly will now.”

Solomons said a positive feature of the game was that his two high-profile players, captain Luke Watson and former Sharks and Springbok lock Steven Sykes, came through the game well.

Griquas, a Vodacom Cup side, won 30-27 after the Kings led 20-16 at the break.

A late try from replacement hooker Simon Westraadt saw Griquas snatch a dramatic win after they trailed 17-3 in the first half.

This loss follows unimpressive pre-season victories by the Kings over the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (28-12) and an SWD Franchise XV (29-13), and a 41-31 loss to the Lions last weekend.

They will play in this year’s Super Rugby competition at the expense of the Lions, with their first game at home to Australia’s Force on February 23.
