From rubbish heap to top of the world: Rupee gets new lease on life

2013-10-16 00:00

CAPE TOWN — World traveller Joanne Lefson has a new dog to accompany her on her trips promoting pet rescue.

Lefson’s previous companion Oscar died in January when Lefson ran him over in a tragic accident in California.

Now she has set off on a trip to Mount Everest, with Rupee, who she found in a rubbish heap in India a month ago.

Lefson wrote on Facebook: “Oscar, Rupee found me. He collapsed into my arms on a deserted rubbish dump in northern India. He ran to me, desperate for his life. How could I turn away? I want you to know, as a new chapter in my life begins, you are in my heart, you will never leave.”

She said she took Rupee to a shelter, but went back later to adopt him.

The pair are carrying Buddhist prayer flags to the Everest base camp.

Yesterday was the fifth day of Expedition Mutt Everest, and the pair were at Namche Bazaar at 3 440 metres above sea level.
