From teaching to business success

2008-02-05 00:00

WHILE city businessman Mike Mkhwanazi’s underlying flair for business began in his youth, it was a decision to leave his job as a teacher in 1999 to start a cellphone retailing and repair business that really unleashed his full potential as an entrepreneur.

The move has undoubtedly opened a new and successful chapter in his life.

Mkhwanazi was recently nominated for the Emergent Black Businessperson of the Year award at the 2007 Nedbank Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) Business Awards, for the success of Jabs Comm Services, the group that incorporates all his businesses.

Initially, about nine years ago, he established a shop in a busy part of the CBD on Langalibalele Street.

“I was an accountancy and economics teacher for 18 years before I left the profession. I started very small, with my own money. It did very well and I was the only black businessperson in that area at the time,” Mkhwanazi said.

“When I started, I knew very little about that type of business. I took an interest in the business and I also worked with another skilled businessman and I learnt how to repair phones from him.”

The shop achieved tremendous success and was eventually transformed into an integrated communications services business.

Mkhwanazi also runs a corporate clothing business and a thriving restaurant.
