From the dark side

2007-02-01 00:00

THERE are only two films opening locally this weekend, with Spider-Man 3 showing at all three cinema complexes. Conversations with God opens at Nu Metro as well and Sunday's Bollywood slot at CineCentre is filled by Namastey London.

• Spider-Man 3 is the third in the series to have Sam Raimi directing, with Tobey Maguire back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as his love interest, Mary Jane. A strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and releases Spider-Man's dark side. So for this, the third outing in the franchise, not all the superhero's enemies are external. Some reviewers have enjoyed the film, others feel the whole project is beginning to run out of steam. But there should be plenty of action and good special effects. The cast includes James Franco, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace.

• Conversations with God is directed by Stephen Deutsch and is based on the life and books of Neale Donald Walsh. Injured in a car accident, jobless and on the skids, he hears a voice, which he believes to be the voice of God. This is a film that is aimed at a specific market where it is likely to be successful, although a number of reviewers have suggested that it is an extended plug for Walsh's books. Starring Herny Czerny.
