Frustration as weighing system at landfill site causes delays

2013-03-14 00:00

DELAYS with a new weighbridge at the New England Road landfill site yesterday wasted hundreds of man-hours and disrupted traffic in Lincoln Meade as waiting trucks and motor vehicles backed on to the main road.

Some drivers who queued to use the dumpsite did not mince their words in describing their frustration at the time it took for them to off-load their rubbish.

Drivers who rent their bakkies to move loads of waste said they they could normally offload in a matter of minutes. Yesterday the process took several as they queued to be weighed.

Raj Govender, who depends on a number of loads to meet his daily turnover target, described the situation as “bulls**t”.

“I can’t put food on the table because today we are taking much longer than usual and we are going to make fewer loads,” he said angrily.

He said that by noon, he had only dumped his second load. On a normal day he would be doing his third trip to meet his target of six loads or more a day.

He said that if this continued, his workers would be out of jobs because there would be no money to be made working at such a disadvantage.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma said staff at the landfill site were updating their database so that they had all the names of the users in the system.

He said it was a once-off measure that would “help in ensuring that when there is a need to fine people for dumping illegal items, we know where to find them”.
