Fuel not on Exco agenda

2009-05-22 00:00

THE issue surrounding the late payment of the Msunduzi Municipality’s fuel accounts was not entertained at yesterday’s Executive Committee (Exco) meeting.

On Wednesday, The Witness ran a story about how basic services such as refuse collection were disrupted in parts of the city on Tuesday due to the failure of the fleet management division to settle the accounts timeously.

DA caucus leader and Exco member councillor Bill Lambert said it was unacceptable that the issue was deliberately witheld from councillors.

“It’s very embarrassing for us as councillors to get phone calls from members of the public asking us to comment on something we know nothing about,” he said.

Msunduzi Municipality Deputy Mayor Mervyn Dirks, who chaired the meeting in the absence of Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo, said the matter was not included in the agenda.

Before the issue was terminated, an official mentioned that the fuel budget was cut from R28 million to R13 million last year, and something needed to be done about effective fuel management.

The issue of municipal employees stealing fuel from municipal vehicles also failed to make the agenda.
