Fun book: sardine run inspires schools competition in Ugu district

2011-08-23 00:00

SOUTH Coast Tourism has embarked on a sardine run colouring-in competition for children between the ages of five to 10 years, based on the huge shoals that swim northwards along the South Coast every year.

General manager for marketing and events Hilda Gabriel says the A5 colouring book focuses on the educational aspect besides the colourful fishes.

“There is lots of educational information, which includes word puzzles, memory tests, word search and sardine run silhouettes for the children to learn about this wonderful phenomenon.”

It also features the diverse marine life that comes to the South Coast along with the sardines.

Ten thousand competition booklets were distributed to all primary schools within the Ugu District.

The competition was conducted as part of an art lesson, under the supervision of teachers. The schools did the preliminary judging and the best three from each school were sent back to us,” said Gabriel.

“This Saturday is the final judging, which will take place at the South Coast Mall.”

The top three pupils will win educational prizes and the overall winner will win a R5 000 book voucher that will be used to purchase books for the library of his or her school.

“The closing date for entries was August 19, but schools that have not yet submitted their

entries are more than welcome to do so by this Friday,” Gabriel said

Final judging will take place on Saturday.
