Funeral cost

2008-04-15 00:00

Readers of The Witness will no doubt be astonished to learn that the Msunduzi Municipality paid R20 000 towards the funeral expenses of a youth manager who had only been in its employ for six months, three of which he had been off sick.

Was he a member of the pension fund and, as such, entitled to funeral benefits? The fact that the payment had to be authorised by the municipal manager suggests otherwise.

Indeed, if it was made from “unspent funds”, why were they unspent? Given the dead man’s poor health record, was a medical report required of him before he joined? Or was he a political appointee, as alleged?

Ratepayers need to know the answers.
