Funny man Nene tells his story in new book

2014-08-25 00:00

THE title of funny man Sifiso Nene’s autobiography reflects how serious he is in acknowledging his faith, and the importance of prayer.

Speaking about his autobiography Our Father during the Pietermaritzburg leg of the Comedy Laugh Tour on Friday, 33-year-old Nene said he starts everything with a prayer.

Born in Empangeni, Nene resigned from his job as a machinist at a factory in Durban in 2008 after he auditioned for the TV show So You Think You’re Funny.

He won the competition in 2009. In Our Father, Nene shares intimate details of growing up, speaking out on the abuse suffered at home and his “broken” relationship with his father.

It also tells of his journey before finding spiritual shelter in prayer, his drive for success and the “undying love for my mother”.

“I just realised there are so many people who would benefit from hearing my story because everyone has gone through terribly challenging circumstances in life. This book is the only way to reach everyone.

“I would take buses up to Johannesburg just for a comedy show and then travel back to KZN the same night as I did not have a place to stay there.

“That was my life for a long time. Winning the show really was the breakthrough,” he said.

Nene’s book is available at Kennarts Books in Empangeni, and Adam’s Books in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

• Nene will be in Empangeni and Newcastle on September 5 and 6 respectively.
