THE 2015 Spar KZN regional hockey tournaments has reached its halfway point, with schools set to battle it out in two regional competitions getting under way in Pietermaritzburg this coming Saturday.

The Central and North regional competitions will be hosted at the UKZN Pietermaritzburg hockey grounds and at Epworth. The Pietermaritzburg North regional will be hosted at Howick High school and the Pietermaritzburg Central regional will be played at Treverton College.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School are aiming to make it five out of five titles in the Central regional, having won all previous tournaments. GHS have featured in all of the medal games in the past four grand finals and finished with two silvers and two bronzes last July.

Meanwhile St Anne’s fielded a young team at last year’s grand finals and walked away with silver. They will be looking to make their fourth appearance at the finals this year, but they need to defeat six other schools, including previous regional winners The Wykeham Collegiate, to get there.

Grace College, St Anne’s, Wykeham Collegiate, Carter High, Howick, Voortrekker High and Linpark High will compete in the Northern suburbs regional.

Meanwhile Epworth Independent High School for Girls; Alexandra High; St John’s DSG; Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High; Maritzburg Christian School; Treverton College; Russell High and Newton School will battle it out in the Central regional.

The two winners of the Pietermaritzburg regionals will join Hoërskool Ferrum from the Northern KZN regional, Amazimtoti from the Durban South regional, Ashton International College from the Durban North Regional and Durban Girls’ College from the Durban Central regional. Four more teams from around KZN will join these teams at the grand finals in July this year.
