TWO of the 10 regional Spar KwaZulu-Natal Shield Teens’ hockey tournaments took place on Saturday, with Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) and The Wykeham Collegiate (TWC) coming out the winners in their respective sections.

The PMB north Tournament was played at St Charles, and was hosted by Voortrekker. The Wykeham Collegiate won, with St Anne’s second, followed by Howick High School, Grace College, Voortrekker High School, Carter High School and Heritage Academy. TWC won all their matches, with the tournament’s highest goalscorer being South African U16 squad-member Kate Polkinghorne (St Anne’s), with six goals.

The PMB central tournament was hosted at St John’s Diocesan School for Girls, with GHS the winners, followed by Epworth, Treverton, St John’s, Maritzburg Christian School, Alexander High School and Linpark. GHS won all their matches, with the tournament’s highest goalscorer being SA U16 squad-member Leeann Neave (Epworth), with seven goals.

Nikita Cryer and Anna-Marié Maartens were chosen as the most promising umpires.

These tournaments were also used as part of the process of selecting the uMgungundlovu District U16 and U18 teams. The district teams will be participating in the KZN provincial tournament that will take place in Pietermaritzburg from April 27 to April 29, where the KZN provincial teams who will participate in the national tournaments will be selected.

GHS beat TWC in the Parklane Spar final, a separate competition held within the overall tournament format.

The 10 regional Spar KZN Shield Teens’ hockey tournaments provide the opportunity to nearly 100 school first teams in the province to participate. The winners of the two PMB tournaments will come up against the winning schools from the north coastal, northern KZN, Sisonke and south coast, Durban North, Durban central, Durban south, Pinetown and Umvoti areas in the 10-team Spar KZN championship finals at St Mary’s School in Kloof on July 21.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderful sponsor in Spar KZN, which is involved with girls’ hockey,” said KZN Schools’ Hockey chairperson Charmaine Koekemoer. “It has facilitated other support sponsors, such as Shield Teens and 100Plus, and what makes this sponsorship unique is that the sponsors are actively involved with the tournaments.”
