GHS thump Voortrekker 3-0

DUE to the independent schools still being on holiday, there was little action in the Parklane Superspar A-League, but the one clash on offer saw Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) beat Voortrekker 3-0 after leading 1-0 at half-time.

“The first half was evenly contested with both teams getting opportunities to score,” said Voortrekker coach Charmaine Koekemoer. “Voortrekker got the first penalty corner in the match, but could not convert.”

It was Girls’ High’s Caley Higgs who drew first blood after 20 minutes when she scored from open play, catching the Vorie defenders off guard.

“Although Voortrekker had a number of circle penetrations, their strikers’ finishing skills let them down and SA U18 keeper Buhle Zondi from Girls’ High denied them,” said Koekemoer. “GHS pushed harder in the second half and the Vorie defenders were unable to contend with the speed of the GHS strikers.”

Kirsten Hohls and Nompilo Thenjwayo of GHS each added to the tally in the second half, when they managed to beat SA U16 keeper Prudence Qwesha in the Vorie goals.

Koekemoer said Voortrekker girls who played well were Lisa Schaup (vice-captain) and Odette Craig (captain), while for GHS the Vories coach was impressed with Mashau and Thenjwayo.
