Gagasi MD fired for ‘reckless financial management’

2009-11-05 00:00

THE managing director of the Gagasi 99.5 radio station in Durban, Pearl Sokhulu, has been fired.

Sokhulu, who has been on suspension for the past eight months over allegations of mismanagement, was given her marching orders by the station’s board of directors on Tuesday.

Attempts to contact Sokhulu for comment were unsuccessful.

A statement by station spokesman Khululekani Shandu did not elaborate on the charges laid against Sokhulu.

However, it said that an internal investigation, which began eight months ago when Sokhulu was suspended, concluded that she is guilty of most of the charges.

“Over the past eight months, an independent disciplinary inquiry … investigated a number of charges of misconduct laid by the radio station’s board of directors against Sokhulu,” said the statement.

“The board has received the comprehensive report from the chairman of the inquiry and Sokhulu has been found guilty on most of the charges laid against her,” it continued.

“Given the nature of the charges and extent of the findings, the board has come to the decision to release Sokhulu from her responsibilities as the MD of Gagasi 99.5 with immediate effect.”

Previous reports stated that Sokhulu, who is credited with revamping the image of the station and increasing its audience, was charged by the board with reckless financial management.

The board has appointed breakfast show DJ Alex Mthiyane as the acting manager.
