Gallery reopens despite unsolved theft

2008-12-26 00:00

Waterfall art gallery Art Fanatics has re-opened, even though the valuable painting that was stolen at the end of October hasn’t been found.

Gallery owner Peter Davies said a case was opened shortly after the R5 000 piece went missing in broad daylight. He said the painting, Red Dust Parched Earth by local artist Bruce Morgan, was on an easel at the gallery door. The alarm was raised at around 9.15 am.

Although all in the vicinity were questioned, any leads have proved useless. However, the gallery has received a number of crank calls.

“At the end of the day, the real loser has been the artist. We just want anyone who finds this painting for sale on the side of the road, to know what they are dealing with,” Davies said. He said this piece was one of Morgan’s favourites and one on which he had spent 36 hours.
