Gamalakhe’s Island City FC finds a sponsor

2011-04-11 00:00

ISLAND City Football Club from Gamalakhe had reason to celebrate yesterday when the paperwork was finalised on a deal that will see the club receive full sponsorship for next season.

The sponsorship, which comes from local company Universal Choices, includes the purchase of a new kit for the team and covers travelling expenses.

The managing director of Universal Choices, Gary Smart, speaking at a press briefing at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre yesterday, emphasised the importance of supporting communities on the South Coast.

“This has been something that we have wanted to do for a whil. We have looked at how we can get involved and we are very happy that today has finally come.

“It is so easy to just hand over a chequebook, but it is the work in the community that really matters.”

Smart said there are plans for Universal Choices to get involved in sponsoring the entire league.

“This season we will be working on a model that will hopefully allow us to provide sponsorship for the whole league in the region, something that has never happened before,” said Smart.

“The idea is that the youth of the community start looking up to these young men and that they veer away from things like drugs and get involved on the football pitch.”

Vela Mazibuko, chairperson of Island city Football Club, thanked everybody involved in the sponsorship.

He added, “I would like to promise you a great partnership in the future.

“And to our supporters, I promise you all great games in the future.”

Island City are lying in first position on the SA Football Association Ugu region U21 log and look certainties for the title with a 10-point gap between themselves and second place.
