Gang attack: five more held

2010-10-06 00:00

POLICE have arrested five more suspects in connection with the gang-related murder which took place in Mpophomeni, Howick, on Saturday night.

This brings the number of arrested suspects to eight as three were arrested on the same night of the attack.

One of the three was shot in the hip after the group resisted arrest.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said following a lead on Sunday, police cornered the suspects in a house in the area.

On Saturday, Zitha Kunene and a friend, Sbonelo Makhathini (both in their early 20s), were hacked to death in what is believed to be a revenge attack after a man believed to belong to the “26” or “28” prison gang was stabbed and taken to hospital earlier that evening.

The two were asleep at Kunene’s home with two other men and three women when about 10 men wielding bush-knives forced their way through a window at about 11 pm.

The assailants then stripped one of the women, in her early 20s, naked and took her away.

The woman was later beaten up and allegedly sexually assaulted.

Jeevan said she is recovering at Northdale Hospital.

The accused are Sphamandla Nxumalo (22), Mthobisi Gwala (19), Tsidiso Mqhasi (21), Nkosi Cebekhulu (24), who was shot to the hip and is still in hospital, brothers Thandanani (18) and Welcome Loyile (24), Ayanda Sibisi (18) and Nkosinathi Mchunu (22).

Yesterday seven of the suspects appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court and were remanded in custody for bail application, with Cebekhulu remanded in absentia.

They will appear again on Tuesday.
