Gang killing: four held

A FORMER police reservist and three men from Chatsworth have been arrested for an alleged murder in Sydenham.

It is alleged that the group of men, aged between 19 and 42, killed a 25-year-old man because they suspected he was involved in the theft of brassware from a temple.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said that on Friday police received a report that a man’s body had been found along a road in the Silverglen area. They body was wrapped in plastic and had assault wounds.

The suspects are due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon and are facing kidnapping and murder charges.

Mdunge said investigations established that the victim was allegedly kidnapped at his home in Palmiet Road, Sydenham, on September 19.

The police did not condone such acts of vigilantism, he said, and urged the public not to take the law into their own hands but to report suspected criminals to the police.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has warned that vigilantes will face the full force of the law.
