A MAN was shot dead and another seriously injured during a police sting operation to nab members of Umlazi’s most wanted gang.

Members of the KwaMakhutha Task Team and the dog unit swooped on the gang after receiving a tip-off from an informer on Tuesday morning.

Five members of the Jerusalem gang, one of the area’s most notorious, were believed to be hiding in a shack in Emajubeni road in Umlazi’s B section.

Police spokesman Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said the gang is wanted in connection with several housebreakings, hijackings and rapes in Umlazi.

“Before our members could enter the shack, one of the suspects opened fire on police.

“Police retaliated and shot one suspect dead” he said. The dead man has been identified as Gery Hluko.

Another suspect was wounded in the cross fire between the suspects and police.

Ngidi said he is in a critical condition under police guard at Prince Mshiyeni hospital in Umlazi.

“We will not tolerate thugs and we will clamp down on them.

“We are still searching for the three suspects who escaped,” he said.

Several members were arrested in previous operations.

Police hope to make more arrests soon.
