Gang rape: Accused face life sentences

2012-11-16 00:00

THE prosecution has called for life sentences for two young men who gang raped and drowned a woman at Mpumalanga in 2009.

Pietermaritzburg high court Judge Isaac Madondo, sitting with assessors, yesterday convicted Sihle Zuma (23) and Nkanyiso Mkhize (22) of the rape and murder of Juava Mildred Mdlalose (50), as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances of her brother, Beshu Alfred Mdlalose, on the night of December 18, 2009.

Juava’s niece, Philisiwe Mdlalose, gave evidence that she was walking with her aunt and uncle when they were set upon by three young men, including the accused. She fled to the nearby Mpala tavern for help. On her return, she found her uncle lying on the ground, and her aunt missing.

Her aunt’s naked body was found floating in a water hole at an excavation site nearby.

In confessions to police that were ruled admissible by the high court at the end of a trial within a trial, the men admitted that after drinking in the tavern, they’d decided to rob the Mdlaloses.

Judge Madondo will pass sentence today.
