Gang rape: five teens appear in court

2011-10-11 00:00

FIVE suspects appeared in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with the gang rape of a 24-year-old woman from the Matimatolo area last Sunday.

By Friday last week, Hloniphani Cele (18), Mondli Ntombela (18), Sanele Mkhize (19), Sbongiseni Mkhize (19) and a 15-year-old juvenile were all behind bars facing rape charges. The juvenile was referred to the children’s court.

The woman had claimed to have been raped by 14 people. However, only five men were arrested and it is believed the woman might have become disoriented in the dark and counted the number of times she had been raped rather than the number of rapists.

“We cannot speculate on this, but in our records we have five suspects in the case. It helped that they were known to the victim,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker yesterday.

Three of the suspects were handed over to the police a day after the police visited their homes and informed their parents about their suspected involvement in the case. The victim was returning from a wedding on Sunday last week when the gang ambushed her, and dragged her for about a kilometre before they found a spot to rape her.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “I want to thank detectives for their dedication and zeal in bringing these culprits to book so that no other women may suffer at their hands.”

The case was adjourned to October 18 for bail application.
