Gardener (30) slain in farm robbery

2009-09-17 00:00

A PERFECTLY normal day was turned upside down for a couple whose gardener was shot dead, execution style, after a robbery at their farm in Nottingham Road yesterday afternoon.

The couple are in their sixties.

They also lost firearms, money, as well as their cellphones and credit cards.

When The Witness contacted the couple, they declined to comment, saying they are still trying to get over what happened.

They directed the newspaper to the police for comment.

According to a police report, farm owner Colin Barrett (63) and his wife Nola (61) were inside the house when they heard a vehicle pulling up outside at around 12.20 pm.

Barrett immediately walked towards his front door to investigate and was confronted by four armed men.

He was ordered back into the house and the robbers demanded cash and keys to the house safe.

At this point, the couple’s gardener, Erasmus Mncube (30), entered the house.

Mncube had been working outside and noticed the unfamiliar faces.

He was also held up and Barrett was forced to open the safe.

Inspector Joey Jeevan said a 6,35mm pistol and a .38 special revolver were stolen

The couple were also robbed of a small amount of cash, credit cards and their cellphones.

The Barretts were tied together by their hands with shoelaces.

Mncube was shot once in the head in one of the bedrooms.

Jeevan said the suspects are believed to have been in a blue Mazda bakkie with false registration plates displaying the registration number NRB 44180.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, but an intensive search for the suspects is under way,” Jeevan added.

Anyone with information about the incident is requested to contact Detective Inspector Graeme Baillie of the Nottingham Road detective service at 033 266 6713 or 082 459 3059.

Anonymous callers can phone Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
