Gareth Cliff breaks away with new online ‘unradio’

2014-04-14 00:00

GARETH Cliff, who shocked South Africa when he announced that he would leave 5FM’s morning drive show, has now announced that he will launch an online radio station on May 1.

Keeping in line with his controversial antics, Cliff said that the new online station, CliffCentral.com is going “anywhere and everywhere — we will be uncensored, unhinged and unradio”.

“CliffCentral is not just an online radio station.

“It will be multi-faceted and free from suspensions, restrictions or BCCSA complaints,” Cliff said.

The online radio station will also be broadcast over the social network WeChat.

“CliffCentral will be available online, but what I’m most excited about, is our partnership with WeChat.

“CliffCentral will have its own Official Account (OA) on WeChat and that’s where the magic is going to happen,” he said.

Similar to apps like BBM and WhatsApp, WeChat is a mobile social communication app for smartphones.

“WeChat is a platform that envisions and innovates new ways for people to connect, communicate and share.

“Much like what Gareth has in mind for CliffCentral,” said Brett Loubser, managing director of WeChat Africa.

“It’s not just about streaming. That’s only the beginning of the experience …

“A mash-up of functionalities will be available: think voice and video clips from the CliffCentral team, the Poll with Mol, vouchers, chat groups etc. and the list goes on. This is not radio as we know it,” he said.

The majority of Cliff’s ex-5FM breakfast team has also joined CliffCentral: Leigh-Anne Mol, Damon Kalvari and Mabale Moloi will be a part of The Gareth Cliff Show on CliffCentral from 6 am to 9 am from Workers’ Day.
