Gatorpeeps: SA version of Twitter

2009-04-28 00:00

A South African version of Twitter was launched this week in Lagos, Nigeria. Afrigator — a South African blog rating website — launched GatorPeeps, a micro-blogging service similar to the likes of Twitter, Pownce and Plurk.

But why would a person go to the trouble of signing up a new account with GatorPeeps when Twitter already exists? For those who are familiar with micro blogging, there are a number of differences.

The obvious difference is that, instead of offering “tweets” (status updates on your account) as you do on Twitter, here you “peeps”. Besides the fact that the website is local and is integrated with Afrigator, one of South Africa’s foremost blogging networks, which local bloggers should be familiar with, the site also allows you to embed videos into your peeps.

GatorPeeps also offers a new kind of networking in the form of creating communities. So, when you blog about a certain subject and prefix that subject with a hash sign, you are either joined automatically to that community (if it exists) or, if it doesn’t exist, you automatically create it and become the owner of that community.

For instance typing in #TheWitnessOnliners will make you the owner of a community called TheWitnessOnliners.

The layout has been praised by GatorPeeps users and a variety of functions are available on the main page without needing to click through.
