Gay and Lesbian Network events at Suncoast

THIS Saturday sees the start of a week of festivities for the Gay and Lesbian Network in Pietermaritzburg, culminating in the selection of the annual Mr and Ms Gay KZN at Suncoast next Saturday night.

The events are aimed at drawing public attention to the network, which operates fromTembaletu in Burger Street. It offers counselling support to members of the gay community and is active in the fight against HIV and Aids.

Saturday’s celebrations start with a parade through town headed by drum majorettes from Fezokuhle, all dressed in pink, and ends at Gate 8 of the Royal Showgrounds, where there will be stalls and food and drinks and entertainment. A party at Kismet Hotel and MurMur follows the festival.

On Monday, the network will host a public meeting at the Bessie Head Library at 11 am to showcase the work that it does. Admission is free. Contact Ponie/Comfort by tomorrow at 033 342 6165 for catering purposes.

On Tuesday, World Aids Day, at 10 am there will be a commemoration and documentary film screening at the library, followed by drama performances at the Hexagon Theatre on the UKZN campus at 7 pm. A human rights workshop will be held on December 2 at Tembaletu at 10 am.

On Thursday, December 3, Ashtown Hall in ­Pietermaritzburg is the venue for a workshop on heterosexism at 10 am, and that evening there will be a dinner and film screening at the Silver Spoon in the Lower Quarry Centre in Hilton. Booking, at 033 343 1043, is essential.

Saturday, December 5, sees the culmination of the week’s celebrations with the Mr and Ms Gay KZN pageant at 6 pm. Book at 082 445 2577.
