Gays and lesbians: Talk on hate crime

2008-12-01 00:00

In an attempt to curb violence against gay people, the Gay and Lesbian Network will host a hate crime seminar at the Bessie Head Library in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow at 10 am.

Although the workshop aims to address homosexual hate crimes in general, it comes in response to the brutal murders of black lesbian women. These attacks are “traumatising and repulsive”, said Anthony Waldhausen, director of the network, adding that lesbians are raped as a “corrective measure”. Such misinformation is the primary cause of attacks of this nature, he added.

Along with Unisa, People Against Women Abuse and the Durban Gay and Lesbian Centre, the seminar will draft a plan of action to end to the violence.
