Gaza: Cape aid convoy arrives in time for Eid

2011-09-01 00:00

A COMMITTED group of South African humanitarians’ dream of spending a part of Ramadan and celebrating Eid in the Gaza Strip has come true. A group of 100 people travelling with the Africa 1 Aid Convoy Cape to Gaza arrived there on Monday.

There are 70 South Africans in the group and the rest are from Bahrain, Kuwait and the UK. The group, which left Cape Town on July 29, will be handing over relief aid to residents of the Gaza Strip.

The estimated total value of the humanitarian aid is R13,5 million. It was all sourced from individual and community donors across Southern Africa.

The aid supplies consist mainly of medical supplies, ambulances and generators.

Among the many activities lined up for the convoy members is a special Eid celebration with 3 000 orphaned Palestinian children.

The initiative was spearheaded by the South African-based Al-Quds Foundation and aims to spread awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people.
