Gem heist: One on bail, one in jail

2011-12-21 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court granted R5 000 bail for one accused, but denied bail to his co-accused in the R1 million jewellery case yesterday.

Aadil Ally and Gavin Chetty are charged with housebreaking and theft of R1 million worth of jewellery from the home of Vigee Padayachee.

They are also charged with housebreaking at a flat belonging to Neelan Chetty in Raisethorpe.

Ally is charged with breaking into a room in Pietermaritzburg rented by Sunday Ngcobo on August 20 and with breaking into a house in Sanctuary Road on July 25 belonging to Rooksana Ally. In all these incidents electronic items and other goods were stolen.

Magistrate Reard Abrahams ruled that Ally was not a flight risk, but that Chetty was, as he has no family. He thus denied Chetty bail.
