‘Gentleman’ holds up crèche

Ria De Beer is glad to be alive after she had a firearm pointed at her head by criminals who attacked her at her De Beer Childcare Facility in Havelock Road on Tuesday evening.

The attackers spared her life, that of her five-year-old granddaughter and her two daughters.

De Beer, who was assaulted by one of the two criminals, called him a "gentleman".

"I thought he was going to kill us because he kept pointing his firearm at my head. But he was too gentle to shoot us," said De Beer.

Two men, one of them with his face covered, entered the crèche as De Beer and her two daughters, Wendy Barker (30) and Jolene Underwood (33), were busy writing fundraising letters. The gunman, whose face was covered with a cloth, came into the centre’s main hall, and demanded the car keys to De Beer’s Citi Golf.

"As the gentleman with a gun in his hand came in, I shouted at my daughters to give him everything he wanted. He was not saying a lot except ‘keys, keys’ and ‘car, car’.

"My little granddaughter said ‘granny that man has a gun’. I pushed her on to the floor and lay on top of her. The gunman kicked me hard on the back," said De Beer who at the time had her car keys in her hand.

The second man entered and went to another room where her two daughters were. He kicked Barker and forced the two women to lie down. The criminals took the car keys, two cellphones, a money box containing R500 petty cash and an expensive camera, which De Beer had borrowed from one of the parents at the crèche. They then disappeared with De Beer’s red Citi Golf with registration NP 35471.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said police are investigating the armed robbery and no arrests have yet been made.
