Get ready for spell of wintry weather

2008-06-05 00:00

The second fall of snow on the Drakensburg this year has been sighted and the next few weeks are expected to be a little cooler than last year, reports the Durban Weather Bureau.

Spokesman for the Durban Weather Bureau Colin Anderson says the snowfall was spotted on the eastern, northern and southern parts of the berg.

“The thickest layers of snow appear to be in the Sterkfontein Dam area and high peaks of the range,” he said.

Even though temperatures have dropped to as low as -5 C˚ degrees in Underberg, Anderson said the ground is still too warm for the snow to last and expects it to melt in the next two days.

Pietermaritzburg will reach a high of only 19 C˚ today said Anderson, but this temperature is likely to get cooler over the weekend.

In fact, the entire KZN province can expect lower than normal temperatures over the weekend and continuing into next week.

Temperatures will warm a little on Monday and Tuesday next week, but are likely to drop to quite chilly weather from mid week, extending through the weekend.
