Ghana: United’s Awal misses out

2012-11-15 00:00

MARITZBURG United centre back Mohamed Awal’s Afcon 2013 hopes have suffered a major blow after he was unable to make the trip with the Ghanaian national squad for last night’s international friendly against the Cape Verde Islands.

It was confirmed yesterday that the Ghanaian Football Association had failed to process the 24-year-old’s visa application on time and that he was made to stay with United and focus on the buildup to Tuesday’s PSL clash with SuperSport United at Harry Gwala stadium.

Awal was set to make his first international appearance last night and he has now lost a valuable opportunity to show coach Kwesi Appiah why he should be included in the Ghanaian squad for next year’s continental showpiece in South Africa.

“Of course, Mohamed is very disappointed and all of us at the club are,” United team manager Quinton Jettoo told The Witness.
