Ghana friendly: McCarthy out of the loop

2010-08-06 00:00

NEW Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane announced his first squad yesterday, and there was no place again for prodigal striker Benni McCarthy, while much-maligned captain Aaron Mokoena was able to keep his place.

Mosimane’s squad for Wednesday’s friendly against World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana at Soccer City showed five changes from the 24-man group of players on duty for South Africa during last month’s global tournament.

Given the short space of time Mosimane has had since replacing predecessor Carlos Alberto Parreira three weeks ago, the new Bafana coach opted for continuity despite pressure to introduce young blood.

Asked if he had been tempted to include SA’s all-time top scorer McCarthy, who had been excluded from the World Cup squad due to fitness issues, Mosimane said the squad had been selected “on merit”.

Ghana’s squad announced on Wednesday included most of their World Cup stars.
