Giant cantilever beams on N3 interchange laid ahead of schedule

THE massive upgrade of N3-Chota Motala Road interchange took a major step forward on Saturday with the placement of massive concrete beams.

The beams measured 19,4 metres.

The site manager of the upgrade, Bradley Naidoo of Group Five, told The Witness yesterday that the operation was a success, adding that they completed the work ahead of schedule.

The Chota Motala interchange was reopened by 5.45 pm on Saturday and the N3 by 6.30 pm.

Fifty-five Group Five workers were busy on the site on Saturday.

They were assisted by 25 Road Traffic Inspectorate officers and 12 Msunduzi Traffic Police officers.

Naidoo explained that the first operation entailed the closure of the N3 northbound between 4 am and 8 am on Saturday.

This was to place 28-tonne cantilever beams cradling two piers on the northbound carriageway.

Sixteen beams cradling two bridge piers were placed across the southbound carriageway.

A cantilever beam was also placed on the southbound carriageway in order to facilitate the creation of a walkway.

Naidoo said a 100-ton crane placed the beams on the freeway. An 80-ton crane moved equipment and infrastructure.
