2011-09-06 00:00

THE Gift of the Givers has been granted permission to set up a medical care base at Banadir Hospital, the largest hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia, where thousands of patients are flocking from various refugee camps in and around Mogadishu.

The United Nations yesterday added a sixth district to its list of those suffers severe famine in the country.

The Pietermaritzburg-based relief aid organisation yesterday airlifted 36 tons of emergency medical supplies, medical equipment and nutritional supplements to Mogadishu in its seventh mercy flight.

A 30-member medical team flies out on its eighth plane with another four tons of supplies today.

Said chairperson Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, “Contributions of relevant medical equipment and medical supplies from pharmaceutical and medical companies would be extremely pleasing and so would the provision of wheelchairs.”

Gift of the Givers needs an orthopedic surgeon, two anaesthetists, a theatre sister, a paediatrician and two primary healthcare nurses with special interests in paediatric patients, especially the care of intravenous lines.

A 20-member SA medical team treated more than 5 000 patients from August 1 to 8.

For details of medical requirements, call Dr Yakub Essack at 082 809 1182 or 083 608 3177.
