The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) school of music presents Azanah. A graduate of the UKZN School of Music’s African music and dance programme, Azanah will perform an eclectic array of traditional and modern compositions influenced by a range of musical styles, which include umakhweyana bow, house music and Afro-jazz. The performance takes place at the Howard College Theatre at UKZN from 12.15 pm to 1 pm. Entrance is free. Inquiries: 031 260 3353.


The Maritzburg Musicians’ Club, hosted at the Red Door, features Zephyr, a three-piece band consisting of Liam, Jeremy and Colin. They have performed at Splashy Fen and other local music gatherings. They write their own material and many of their numbers are well-known enough to have people singing along. May 11. The Sunset Soiree features a Mother’s Day treat — the favourites of the great songbirds. Bring your mother or grandmother to a picnic tea at The Studio, 208 Chapel Street, and listen to cabaret singer Karin Herd pay tribute to Edith Piaf, Shirley Bassey and other famous singers. Soprano Lisl Riley will be performing songs made popular by the likes of Sarah Brightman and Celine Dion. Claire Wright and Ronel Wood will accompany the two songbirds on piano. May 18. Bryan Crumpler, the American clarinet virtuoso, will perform the second concert in the Memorable Concert series at Memorial Hall, Hilton College. He will perform works by Schumann, Von Weber, Brahms, Poulenc, Pavkovic, Williams and Rosenblatt and will be accompanied by South African pianist Francois du Toit.
